Introducing Fascinating Morocco currency

Morocco, the land of vibrant souks, breathtaking landscapes, and rich cultural heritage, is a country that captivates the imagination of travelers worldwide. Therefore, one of the intriguing aspects of visiting a new country is exploring its currency, as it unveils a unique facet of its history, culture, and economy. In the case of Morocco, the Moroccan dirham takes center stage. Join us on a fascinating journey through the currency of Morocco as we uncover its origins, design, value, and significance.

Morocco's currency

The Moroccan dirham comes in both coins and banknotes, each showcasing the country’s unique cultural motifs. Thus, the coins are issued in denominations of 1, 5, 10, and 20 dirhams, with each featuring distinct designs and patterns. In addition, the obverse side of the coins typically bears the royal crown and intricate geometric patterns, while the reverse side showcases national symbols, such as mosques, palm trees, or traditional Moroccan instruments.

As for banknotes, they are available in denominations of 20, 50, 100, and 200 dirhams, each depicting prominent Moroccan figures, architectural marvels, or landscapes. For instance, the 20-dirham note features the portrait of King Mohammed VI, while the 50-dirham note displays the Mausoleum of Mohammed V in Rabat. These intricately designed banknotes truly reflect the country’s rich cultural heritage.

Withdrawing money in Morocco

When traveling to Morocco, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with the process of withdrawing money to ensure a smooth financial experience throughout your trip. Here’s a practical guide to help you navigate the currency withdrawal process in Morocco:

In general, ATMs are widely available in major cities and tourist areas in Morocco. Look for reputable ATMs affiliated with well-known banks such as BMCE Bank, Attijariwafa Bank, or Banque Populaire. These banks have extensive networks and are more likely to provide reliable services.

Withdrawal fees in Moroccan currency

We recommend that you always use the withdrawal limit when withdrawing at an ATM. This is in Morocco at most ATMs about 2000 Diram (190 $). The problem is when withdrawing money with the card usually 5 or 10 $ fees are charged by your house bank. So if you often withdraw money, you often pay fees.

Before departing for Morocco, it’s crucial to inform your bank or financial institution about your travel plans. This will prevent any unexpected card blocks due to suspected fraudulent activity. Informing your bank allows them to note your travel destination and ensure smooth transactions when using your debit or credit card abroad.

Change money on site Morocco currency

If you plan to exchange your Euro for Dirham, you must not do that in your country, because officially the import of the national currency into Morocco is prohibited. But don’t worry, you still can change your money locally.

In some other ways, you can exchange your money at the airport right after your arrival. Moreover, you still save up some rates if you exchange your money at the local office exchanger in the big cities.

If you prefer to exchange cash, you can visit currency exchange offices or local banks. These establishments provide currency exchange services, but keep in mind that exchange rates and fees may vary.

Note if you want exchange a large amount of cash, you should compare the exchange rates offered by the differents providers on site.

Cashless payment with VISA, Master card with Maestro logo is possible in Morocco! but not yet, widespread. Over all, you will be able to pay card in hotels, at the airport, and in large restaurents and stores. Again, you should ot forget about the fees. Since you are ouside your borders, your card payments will be charged international assignment fee. Most banks charge 1 % to 3 % of the total amount.

while travelling in Morocco you will travel through the orient, you will certainly be able to drawn through the beautiful markets, Bazaazres. For that case you should take enough cash, because most of local markets accept cash only. and some of it to tip the market. most recommended is to bargan because it a part of the culture and it is more fun.
