Why Choose a Morocco 5 Day Itinerary Over Shorter Tours?
The distance between Fes and Marrakech via the Erg Chebbi dunes spans over 1,000 kilometers of diverse terrain. While express 3-day tours require 8 to 10 hours of grueling driving each day, opting for a 5 day itinerary Morocco route transforms long road hours into an unhurried, scenic road trip.
Here is why spending five days in Morocco on this specific circuit provides unmatched value:
- Two Full Nights in the Sahara: Settle into the dunes without the stress of an early morning checkout. You get two golden-hour sunsets and two nights under the Milky Way.
- Deeper Cultural Connection: Meet semi-nomadic families in their traditional woven tents, listen to spiritual Gnawa musicians in Khamlia, and sample authentic dates at the ancient Rissani market.
- Relaxed Mountain Gorges & Oasis Stops: Walk through Todra Gorge without feeling rushed by a driver’s tight schedule, and relax in the peaceful palm groves of Skoura.
- Optimal Energy for Ait Ben Haddou: Arrive at North Africa’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage site fully rested before crossing the High Atlas Mountains into Marrakech.
Day-by-Day Itinerary: Your 5 Days in Morocco
Click on each day below to expand the full daily itinerary, travel times, and activity breakdown:
Day 1: Fes to Merzouga — Middle Atlas, Cedar Forests & the Ziz Valley
▼
Your private 5 day Morocco tour begins with a comfortable morning pickup from your riad or hotel in Fes. Leaving the medieval urban medina behind, your journey heads south into the serene Middle Atlas Mountains. Your first stop is Ifrane, often nicknamed the “Switzerland of Morocco,” known for its clean alpine architecture, European-style chalets, and cool mountain air.
Continuing through the mountains, you will visit the ancient Azrou Cedar Forest, home to native troops of wild Barbary macaques. Enjoy a brief walk under the grand trees and capture photographs of the wildlife. After stopping for a traditional lunch in Midelt, celebrated for its apple orchards and mineral formations, the landscape shifts dramatically into dry desert terrain.
Descend into the jaw-dropping Ziz Valley, an endless green ribbon of millions of date palms wedged between towering red limestone canyon walls. By late afternoon, the rocky hamada gives way to the golden waves of the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga. Here, you will swap four wheels for a gentle camel ride across the sands timed precisely for a Saharan sunset. Arrive at your desert camp for a delicious Moroccan dinner, live Berber drumming around a campfire, and a peaceful night in a comfortable desert tent.
Day 2: Full-Day Sahara Desert Immersion—Nomads, Khamlia & Sandboarding
▼
This full day in the desert is what elevates this itinerary above standard trips. Instead of packing bags and rushing back onto the road, you awaken to a serene Saharan sunrise over the dunes. After a rich camp breakfast, launch into a comprehensive 4×4 off-road Saharan excursion.
Navigate deep into the desert wastes to visit a family of semi-nomadic Berbers living in traditional goat-hair tents. Share a cup of warm mint tea, learn about their daily routines in the desert climate, and gain an authentic perspective on Saharan survival. Next, explore abandoned French lead mines at M’Fis before traveling to the village of Khamlia.
Khamlia is inhabited by people whose ancestors escaped the historical trans-Saharan slave trade. Here, you will experience an uplifting live performance of authentic Gnawa music hypnotic spiritual rhythms featuring heavy iron castanets (qraqeb) and wooden lutes (gimbri). Enjoy a local lunch featuring traditional Berber pizza (Medfouna). In the late afternoon, tackle the dunes with an exhilarating sandboarding session or simply sit back and take in a second sunset, followed by another night under starry skies.
Day 3: Merzouga to Dades Valley-Rissani Souks & Todra Gorge Canyons
▼
Say goodbye to the Sahara dunes and depart for the historic town of Rissani, the ancient capital of Tafilalet and the historical cradle of Morocco’s ruling Alaouite Dynasty. If traveling on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday, walk through its authentic market, where local villagers and desert nomads trade livestock, spices, handicrafts, and dates.
Continue along the path of ancient caravan routes to Tinghir and the dramatic Todra Gorge. Here, sheer red limestone canyon walls plunge 300 meters (1,000 feet) down to a narrow floor carved out by the Todra River. Take a leisurely walking tour along the riverbank while watching rock climbers scale the vertical cliffs.
In the afternoon, proceed into the picturesque Dades Valley (Valley of Figs). Drive along winding roads to marvel at unique geological cliff formations known locally as the “Monkey Fingers” rock structure and the famous hairpin curves of Tisdrine. Check into your boutique hotel or kasbah overlooking the valley riverbed for dinner and rest.
Day 4: Dades Valley to Skoura—The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs
▼
Begin day four with a pleasant breakfast surrounded by the cliff views of the Dades Valley. Your journey continues along the legendary Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing mud-brick fortresses that historically protected ancient trading caravans bringing gold and spices across the desert.
Pass through Kelaat M’Gouna in the Valley of the Roses. If you visit during the spring harvest (April to May), you will smell the fragrance of damask roses in the air. Visit a local cooperative to see how organic rose water, essential oils, and cosmetics are distilled.
Arrive by early afternoon in the tranquil oasis of Skoura. Known for its vast palm groves fed by historic underground irrigation systems (Khettaras), Skoura is home to stunning mud-brick architecture. Visit the iconic 17th-century Kasbah Amridil, featured on Morocco’s 50-dirham banknote. Enjoy a calm afternoon exploring the oasis or relaxing at your eco-lodge pool.
Day 5: Skoura to Marrakech — Ait Ben Haddou & High Atlas Pass
▼
On the final leg of your 5 day Morocco tour, travel toward Ouarzazate, Morocco’s Hollywood, famous for Atlas Film Studios, where classics like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia were filmed. A short drive brings you to the crowning jewel of Moroccan earthen architecture: Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou.
Explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside an expert guide. Cross the riverbed, wander through its winding alleyways, climb past clay structures, and reach the old granary at the top for panoramic views across the Ounila Valley.
Leaving Ait Ben Haddou, begin your steep climb into the High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 meters / 7,415 feet elevation). Wind through mountain roads past mud-built Berber villages, stopping at scenic view points and women’s Argan oil cooperatives along the way. Descend into Marrakech by late afternoon or early evening, where your driver will drop you directly at your Riad or hotel, completing an unforgettable 5 days in Morocco.

Trip to the desert
I traveled to the Merzouga desert with my teenage daughter in a group of ten individuals for 5 days tour from Fes to Marrakech. It’s been an unforgettable experience. The treatment, attention, and service provided by both the guides and the trip organizers have been superb. The camp was a complete surprise, with everything in excellent condition and cleanliness. The delicious food and the celebration at night around the fire with the Berbers playing the drums were fantastic. We will undoubtedly return, but this time for a longer stay in the desert to appreciate the wonders of the dunes
